Kings, queens, nobles,… that’s what comes to the mind when one thinks purple. Purple in all its tints, shades and variants is the color of royalty and superiority. It is also the color that strikes the perfect balance between both the spiritual and physical realms. It is the color of imagination and inspires high ideals. Too much of it however, leads to a royal interior disaster!

In interior décor, purple is almost always used when designing spaces reminiscent of Victorian and other classic European styles. The richness in the hue just works perfectly in bringing out grandeur of medieval Europe and boats an unmatched royalty that no other color can bring forth.

Though in its lighter tints it is very harmonious and goes easy on the eyes while still maintaining a certain element of luxe.

Because of its visual intensity in high saturation, violet also works well in accents in modern interiors. It creates interesting focal points and adds a dramatic element of contrast characteristic of most contemporary styles of interior décor.

And here’s what we mean by a royal interior disaster!

Now we know that some of you may just want to facepalm over this idea… but sometimes being a little overly decorative can actually be nice. To be more specific, we’re talking about treating a window with the modernity and sophistication of a blind coupled with the traditional-ness of long draping curtains – a double treatment! Honestly… if you can have two sets curtains on the same window, then why can’t you have a blind and a curtain together? And admit it… it is totally Retro…no?

Take a look at these cozy reading spots that are absolutely gorgeous and get some ideas rolling in your imagination – if you’re an avid reader of course. We’d advise you to use natural light since it’s a natural energy-saver; though we can’t do much in case you’re an insomniac. Also, add a personal touch by putting up a roller shade to control the inflow of light when needed.

If you’re tech-savvy, then you’ll definitely love electric roller shades for your windows at your home or your workplace. They do have an edge over manual roller you know!

They’re a lot easier to use and they save even more time. Think about it – how long it normally takes you to fidget with a manual roller’s cord, whereas an electric roller just works with the push of a button. And this really helps if you have to pull up your rollers frequently.

Electric rollers offer a lot more security. Since they’re motor driven and thus more durable and able to sustain heavier weights, metallic and fiberglass rollers can be used outside your space for better protection against intruders as opposed to a textile based manual roller that can be ripped apart with ease.

Aesthetically, electric roller shades are a lot more crisp and tidy. No hanging cords and no bending dowels and definitely no uneven lengths from the bottom!

So what are you thinking about?

Retro – or an eccentric mix of old styles with new forms or vice versa is a highly popular style of interior décor in most urban countries. Conventionally, people mix the 50s, 60s and 70s with contemporary elements to mock up a retro interior. However the possibilities are virtually limitless as one is free to mix and match whatever elements they like from the past and fuse them with their own style of modern décor. And this is what makes most retro designs unique – a high level of personalization almost difficult to recreate.

Bold prints and motifs, heavy fabrics and textures, overdetailing and the overuse of color dispersed on the walls and furniture are signature to most retro styles.

It’s either wood or metal. If it’s modern furniture, it’s classic lighting, and if it’s classic furniture, it’s modern lighting.

Window treatments are a mixture of graceful drapery in the form of curtains with simple rollers and blinds.

Typically, retro styles incorporate classic objects with contemporary sensibilities. However, that’s not the only way to go about it – there are a lot of old world styles to choose from and even more moderns trends to mix them with. What’s your way of doing retro?

It’s always good to have a sense of patriotism lingering around in your home; keeps you connected to your roots we think. And what better way to add that feeling other than with the help of a roller blind – functional and aesthetically appealing both at the same time. And even if it’s not your own national flag, you’re still getting some cool design elements to play round with in your interior space. So check out these five flags and see what suits your taste.

Well obviously… our first pick had to be this one! Though, we’d advise you to use this one on a wider window so that you don’t kill the horizontal element. A primary palette and the stripes are two other fantastic elements that you can extract from this one to whip up a nice and modern interior.

Aah yes… our lovely neighbors’! We bet even Martha Stewart couldn’t’ think of this fabulous idea, but that maple alone would make one hell of a motif for a plain roller. We’re thinking an interior space designed with a high contrast in red and white and a bit of black here and there. Perfect for a bedroom… what say you?

Alright… this one has to be the best… and the most intense color combinations amongst all the flags of the world – correct us if we’re wrong. It’s fiery, it’s fast and it’s full of energy. Sometimes it’s okay to have just color and no motifs to play around with. Or you could use the colors to design interesting geometric motifs for the rest of your furnishings. And if not that either then simple hail Hitler

More primaries, more basics and a lot more fun! This one’s bright and cheery and would make a great roller shade for a kid’s room or play area. You could also try giving the print a bit of a tilt to change the rectangles and squares to look like a rhombus instead.

Okay… we don’t know where this country is and don’t know much about it either, but that is one awesome flag! We just love the way the colors converge to a single point.

So what’s your nationality?

Scientifically speaking, white is perceived as a combination of all of the hues in the spectrum in equal proportions. White thus represents completion, wholeness and balance – all in one. Emotionally, the color white is associated with calmness and peace – it is without a shadow of doubt soothing to the eyes and soul. Untainted, unstained, untarnished, as pure as Virgin Mary and as gorgeous as Snow White, in all its meanings and beauty, white is the color of purity and chastity – no dirty spots and no dirty thoughts!

In interior décor, white serves as the base upon which most of not all colors are painted to bring them out even more prominently. So to speak, white is almost an interior essential – without it, an interior space can never be complete or strong… even if the color does not show at all by the end of the process.

Due its light, big and spacious effect, white is a common color that is used in most minimalistic themes as well as those that thrive on the sophisticated aesthetics of the 21st century. It makes small spaces look big and less crowded, and makes big spaces look simple and elegant… and even bigger of course!

Though white furnishings are high on maintenance, they’re simply unbeatable. White carpets are a definite no, just make sure your guests don’t sit on crap before they sit on your crisp white couch and white rollers… nothing surpasses the chicness they lend to your room.

Though we will still say… do add a bit of color… you just might end up getting bored with all the blankness otherwise.

If you thought that pet poop was a hard-to-handle domestic issue with pets, think again. These little and sometimes not so little furry creatures can pull, cling and tear onto any and every of your interior furnishings. And believe it or not, they have a very strong affinity for your blinds – and ruining them!

Pets love the window!

That’s right… more than granny does! Pets are natural observers and love to look at birds, squirrels and any other potentially edible life form outside the window instead of just sitting on the couch like a useless lump of flesh and hair.

If your pet is trying to bend you window blinds to gain access to the window seat, we’d suggest keeping your blinds rolled up. And if privacy is an issue, use something like a cat curtain.

They just don’t leave the cord alone!

Oh dear… the biggest nuisance ever! There can be nothing more enticing to these little creatures than the dangling cords to rolling up your blinds… not even a ball. Forget the fact that the cords are actually harmful for pets, what’s obviously more important is that their constant chewing and tugging can bring your blinds down.
Now if this happens… the one thing you can’t do is put a noose around your pet’s mouth, but you can tie up your cords neatly and keep them out of reach.

Of climbers and clawers!

Particularly cats… as if they were prepping for a gold in gymnastics at the Olympics. Pets are natural observers, but they’re curiosity is even more daunting. They scratch and climb things in an attempt to see that which they cannot see otherwise. If only they realized that what’s not in their reach…. IS NOT MEANT FOR THEM MAYBE?!
Sadly there’s not much that you can do about this except for providing them with … wait hold your breath… this one made us go ‘lol’ as well… a cat tower!

And whoever said that only princes climbed towers!

Wallpapers have to be one of the coolest indoor wall treatments ever simply because they come in a virtually limitless variety of designs that you can use to personalize your space. Having said that, we’d also say that the best way to use them in a room is to have them pasted on the wall that has the most exposed surface area – and we mean just a single wall as opposed to the old school British way of covering all of the walls with wallpaper… kind of overly unaesthetic we think. And after you’ve done one wall completely, use the remaining bits to balance it out on the opposite end to avoid an interior disaster.

And what better way to use the leftovers than creating a simple wallpaper roller shade? Here’s what you need to do.

Step 1

Measure your window or a shade preciously on it and cut your wallpaper accordingly – like we really needed to tell you that! Don’t for get to leave some extra on the edges for folding and rolling it over it over.

Step 2

Prepare an adhesive to stick the wallpaper to the shade. Ask your wallpaper dealer for guidance as some wallpapers come pre-glued and only need to be dampened. If your wallpaper is too thin, stick it on a lining paper first.

Step 3

Lay the shade on a flat surface and begin mounting your wallpaper onto it working carefully from one end to the other. Make sure to smooth out any air bubbles with a rolling pin. Let the adhesive dry before proceeding any further.

Step 4

Finish edges, mount, staple and celebrate… you’re done!

A length of wallpaper is all it takes to turn a plain roller shade into a work of art — complete with its own frame. Showcase a very special piece, a favorite vintage paper, or a remnant. You can tie the room together with a pattern that echoes an existing motif, or build a head-to-toe look by using the same paper that’s on the walls.

A reverse roll-shade (meaning a shade that rolls from front) works best. Ask for remnants at a wallpaper store for this project.
